Love the column, as usual. But then it's easy to love it from up here in Vermont, where my high-speed-connected computer looks out on the stream that almost washed our house away again this year.

And if you really want a gift, try this one: Malted Media or its eBay version – gawd, I'm shameless. :)

Happy holidays, etc., to your taste. And yes, I have a book here for my wife, about great culinary disasters.

An animal is never an appropriate surprise gift. You seem like a smart person, so you probably know darn well that treating animals like gifts of "stuff" is one of the factors that leads to pets being viewed as disposable goods, animal overpopulation and thousands of unnecessarily euthanized pets every year. For heaven's sake, don't lump dogs in with newspaper subscriptions and bottles of Scotch. At the very least I would have expected a disclaimer in this short list that getting a dog must be a decision made entirely by the recipient (even if someone else pays for the "gift").

If you love animals, don't contribute to the suffering of other animals, no matter how indirect you believe your influence to be.

Great list. Thanks. I would add another item – fresh air and serenity! Yes, by buying annual passes to our county, state and national parks and the organizations that create and maintain them.

You will find a good list here. I think you (and your readers) will like these options!

Re: Very Short Stories
By Wired magazine editors
From: Christine Zaremba

I am just writing to express my very sincere thanks for running your article "Very Short Stories." Fed up with my unproductive 7th grade class, I explained the concept of flash fiction to them, read them some of your tamer examples, and away they went. The results were nothing short of fantastic! They have been the talk of the school ever since, and the kids are on fire to write some more, even if they didn't know who William Shatner was. So thank you, thank you, thank you for the inspiration!
