For months, hundreds of Firefly fans have been planning to attend the second annual Flanvention, a convention in Burbank for fans of the Firefly TV show and Serenity movie. Guests at the con would include several actors from the show, plus there would be a big costume party, and maybe even a surpise visit from Joss Himself. But then, a few weeks ago, Flanvention organizers Booster Events started hinting that there might not be a Flanvention, due to "financial reasons." Since many fans had already bought non-refundable plane tickets, this was bad news. A few days ago, however, Booster said Flanvention was definitely on. More people bought tickets and booked their hotel rooms. Then everything went from the very bad to the ridiculously evil.
24 hours before the convention was due to start today, Booster Events replaced its website with the single sentence:
Over a hundred fans were already at the hotel, with many more due to arrive today. No word from Booster on refunds or even on what the hell happened. Luckily, the resourceful California Browncoats have planned a "backup bash" for the fans in town so that there are no riots full of people chanting the "fruity oaty bar" song. There may not be photo-ops with the stars at the Backup Bash, but there will be a lot of fans and a lot of love for Firefly. As for Booster Events, I'm thinking lawsuit(s). Seriously.
