With all of the "Get a Mac" parodies I posted last week, I didn't expect to discover that one of the largest companies in the world would soon have its own parody of the series brought to light – or that it would be totally inexplicable when it appeared.
Sony Australia is doing its best to push the Vaio line of PCs as the "Non-PC PC" in a bid to reclaim ground lost to HP lately, whose new line of Pavilions is fantastic in every regard except not running OS X. Anyway, the Sony affiliate created a nearly non-verbal take off on "Get a Mac." And it does an outstanding job of establishing the Vaio as that one teenage girl from drama club who shopped exclusively at Goodwill and used to end conversations by exclaiming "COOL BEANSIES!"
I mean, seriously, did the wizards at the ad firm spend five minutes on this? Less? Perhaps most noteworthy is the flash animation's take on the signature lines and actions of each of the trio. PCs put their hands near their pelvises and honk. Macs say "Hey!" in a very bored fashion. And Vaios giggle until you walk away from them.
This does speak interestingly to the turn against ugly PCs that has finally grabbed that side of the industry after years of competing solely on price. But if their efforts to look better than Macs stay on this level, they're welcome to stay as long as they want to.
