Sam Harris promotes the religion of reason (the church of non-believers, issue 14.11). However, without a set of accepted and hard-to-change guiding principles, the process of maximizing human happiness is nothing more than a political process. Human history showed us that political processes without a moral constitution are often hijacked and turned against the people, as in many totalitarian regimes. Although religions have many shortcomings, and some religions have guiding principles that are not acceptable to people outside those faiths, I am afraid that a religion of reason will eventually cause more harm than good.
