The "new atheists" make an error in conflating faith and religion. If one looks beyond the dogmas, that the world's faith traditions encode vast amounts of insight about facets of reality that modern science is just beginning to explore. And great spiritual figures have consistently shattered the dogmas of their day.
Dogma arises as a defense against insecurity. The fundamentalist view - whether religious or "new atheist" is too threatened to face the reality that we are the proverbial blind men touching an elephant. The inability to respect the truth of others' experience is antithetical to wisdom, and pretending that science fully explains everything about anything is as foolish as any religious assertion could be. It's this narrow-minded intolerance, not faith based on experience, that threatens the fabric of civilization.
