Hey kids! Danny the Wired edit monkey and all around gaming fan boy here. I’ve got all the dirt, sweat, and tears from the front lines of the PS3 launch event at the SF Sony Metreon- literally!
Fellow Wired staffer, Asami, accompanied me as we got the lowdown on all the drama occurring in the queue from the first five guys in line. Meet, from left, Edgar Alcala, Valentine Aldana, Joshua Motta, Preston Lee, and Chris Toribio. Starting late Wednesday night, these guys ditched school, jobs, girlfriends, and other nagging responsibilities for the bragging rights and the glory of being the first doodz in SF to own the wily and elusive gaming console. Power to the uber geeks!
Hot off the gossip press is that a major band will be playing at the Metreon around 8 this evening. Who is the mystery group? Check out the rumor mill after the jump.
Folks in line reported that Angels and Airwaves (The band fronted by Blink 182 alum Tom DeLong) would be playing- that seems plausible since they just made an appearance on a local radio show. The mystery group is scheduled to do a set at 8:30. We’ll let you boys and girls know who it is as soon as they hit the stage.
Within the glossy facade the of the Metreon, Sony folk were scrambling right and left to get things ready for the human deluge set to be unleashed at 12:01 this am. One of the showcases Sony seemed especially proud of was this massive Playstation 3 test center.
Sony shill, Ryan, demonstrated games like NBA 07 for us but didn’t ask if we wanted to play. Bummer.
Disgusted, we hit the cuts shortly thereafter. More updates to come as the final countdown approaches. Pinkie swear.
