Tonight I'll be talking at San Francisco's CC Salon about how I convinced my publisher to give me a Creative Commons license for my book about monster movies, Pretend We're Dead: Capitalist Monsters in American Pop Culture. There will be some discussion of zombies, evil cyborgs, and mad doctors, but mostly I'll be talking about copyright licensing. Things were made somewhat easier for me in my quest for a CC license because my publisher is Duke University Press. As a university-affiliated organization, they're already interested in the idea of sharing knowledge rather than hoarding it. But still, they were reluctant. I was the first of their authors to request a CC license, and the process was a challenge. Luckily, after a long boat chase involving giant iguanas, an amazing thing happened involving laywers . . . and you'll have to come tonight to find out how it all ended.
Also on the bill with me tonight at CC Salon are Splice and the Homebrew Mobile Phone Club, as well as musical guests the Kleptones.
If you're in the Bay Area, join us for beers and copyright reform from 6-9 PM, at the Shine Bar, 1337 Mission. (What a leet address!)
