Wow. Those scientists seem almost as dangerous as what they are railing against. While religion is in sore need of an update, so is science. The two are not incompatible and no real human progress will be made until both sides learn to meet in the middle. The modern view of god as a moral judgmental entity is as outdated as 8 track tape. In our house god is a force of energy, not some bearded nut in the sky who keeps a check list and listens to my problems. Human existential concepts while varied throughout the world still come from within us. We as a species seem to want to take a stab at almost any concept no matter how absurd, someone seems content to accept almost any nonsense. This is just humanity working out the kinks and it could probably be explained scientifically as some random biological idea generator.
Now while many modern religions may present an almost Smurf-like wordview, modern science is on the polar opposite end of the spectrum with nothing to explain anything but the pure mechanics of this world. We all know that humans are more than the sum of our parts, yet science will not explore this until there is some god/soul particle staring them in the face screaming, "Look at me!"
I am a product of this world, I believe in evolution, I do not believe in the Santa-like god that was shoved down my throat as a child, yet I still believe we have souls, and that there is also some mystical order to this universe. I also do not feel I am entirely in control of my own destiny. My life seems to have been guided to some degree. I do not go to church, I do not go to temple, I do not pray, and yet I still believe there is something else, something more. This unknown is what motivates humanity, and motivates scientists. If there is nothing beyond the mechanics of this universe then why bother unlocking it's mysteries? Who would bother to put together a puzzle who's end image was blank? We all know there is more to this universe than meets the eye. Misguided religious movements, and loud squeaky-wheel individuals should not push science into an existential godless black hole.
If all those scientists look deep into this universe with those powerful telescopes and see nothing but a bunch of fundamental energies and properties then they have gone as blind as the religious fanatics who think the earth was created in 6 days.
