Miracle cancer cures always seem to be just around the corner, and now, a group of South Korean scientists say that they might just have the next cure-all. In a paper published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, they report they have been able to genetically modify one of the many viruses responsible for the common cold to target and kill cancer cells. Previous attempts to modify viruses to kill cancer have all failed, but if this experiment succeeds it could be the dawn of a new era in cancer treatment.
"I believe we have found a way to overcome one of the great obstacles to finding a genetically altered viral cure for cancer," Yun Chae-Ok, one of the researchers, told AFP on Thursday.
Clinical trials will begin next year.
