Despite rumors that there would be more stock available, my local Gamestop had only 10 Playstations 3 on pre-order this morning. I offer this as shopping news for the West Coasters.
I took a trip down to my local Gamestop store #1025 this morning to see if I could nab a pre-order Playstation 3. I showed up about 15 minutes before the store opened to find I was 12th in line, which turned out to be two places too far to grab one—the store said they only had 10 to sell.
Curiously, a woman who was near the front of the line had walked out from purchasing her pre-order—they kept the store locked and led in each customer alone, presumably for some sort of Sony-sanctioned mind wipe—came out saying that they'd told her the store had gotten 16 units, but 6 had already been sold to friends and family. I hope she was mistaken, as purported internal documents leaked to Kotaku said that no more than 2 Playstation 3s were to be set aside for employee purchases per store.
I'll survive; I only really wanted a PS3 to give away for a charity raffle we're holding in early December. Hopefully the woman was mistaken, as store employees later told us they had only been allocated 10 units, all of which had gone to customers. Presuming duplicity, I can hardly blame the employees for lying to what would have been an otherwise angry mob. (Okay, like six more people.)
A call to Gamestop HQ was initially routed to an automated system describing the need to get to Gamestop early. (Thanks for the tip, recording!)
