Engadget reports that Apple might be ready to position the next iPod as an eBook reader. That would be a radical move for the company, as no eBook has achieved the kind of breakaway success predicted for the devices during the overly optimistic early '90s.

We'd say the possibility is very real, since according to a source at a major publishing house, they were just ordered to archive all their manuscripts – every single one – and send them over to Apple's Cupertino HQ. A separate trusted source let us know that the next iPod will have a substantial amount of screen real estate (as we'd all suspected), as well as a book reading mode that pumps up the contrast and drops into monochrome for easy reading.

It's a great idea, and if libraries get on board with this, I might never read physical books on my commute again. I'd also like to state for the record that if the final product looks like Engadget's concept render, there would be one very happy Mac cultist in their audience.
