The World Cup kicks off in June, and even if you suffer from pedospheroblottophobia (the morbid fear of soccer hooligans), you’ll still be able to catch the games on your fave gadget. ZGDV, a German nonprofit design group, plans to transmit 3-D renderings of the matches to cell phones, PDAs, and PCs for free. The feeds will allow users to see the action through the “eyes” of anybody on the field – from the forwards to the referee. Instead of a live broadcast, subscribers will get videogame-like replays with controllable speed and a selectable point of view.
To prepare for the Cup, ZGDV has created a 3-D model of a stadium (working from digital photographs) and a database of individual players that includes details like hairstyle, body type, and sock color. It won’t be exactly like being there, but maybe that’s the GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAL!

Players of the World Cup will be modeled in 3D to make a more interactive and mobile broadcast.
