The lead engineer of Ford's Escape Hybrid was voted the Engineer of the Year. Tom Watson placed ahead of the iPod designer to win the Design News magazine award.
It's surprising that an engineer at Ford, which used technology from Toyota, won for its hybrid design even though the company became involved in hybrids years after Toyota or Honda. However, the Escape was the first SUV hybrid and offered relatively high fuel economy.
