Last year New York introduced the first hybrids into its taxi fleets, and hundreds more are on the way. There are 27 hybrid taxis on NYC streets, with Ford Escapes making up the bulk of the fleet.

Mayor Bloomberg has awarded another 254 medallions (cab licenses) to hybrid and alterative fuel vehicles, but the city hasn't decided if the new medallions will be offered at a discount, as the first set were.

Hybrid taxis in NYC makes sense because of the considerable time spent idling at traffic lights or in the inevitable traffic jam. And cabbies like them since they pay for the gas themselves.
