One of the world's biggest automotive parts suppliers is getting into the hybrid business, which will likely lower the cost of the technology.

The Bosch Group is finishing the prototype of a diesel hybrid and will make its hybrid powertrain available to automakers. The company is developing a new starter system that it claims could reduce fuel consumption by five percent, according to an interview with Bosch Chairman Franz Fehrenbach on Autonews.

Bosch's platform could enable the majority of companies who have yet to produce hybrids to enter the fray without extensive r&d costs. And when the triumvirate of GM, DaimlerChrysler and the BMW Group also enters the market with its hybrid technology, the hybrid premium should drop substantially.
