DIY iPod Phone
Don't waste $150 on Motorola's ROKR. A free program called Mass Storage Synchronizer lets you sync other MP3-playing mobiles with iTunes. Take that, 100-song limit! A couple of caveats: It's not pretty. And it works with only a handful of models - certain Sony Ericssons (including Walkman phones), some Nokia Series 60 handsets, MP3-playing Samsung phones, and Palm's Treo 600 and 650. We tested it with a Sony Ericsson W800i. - Cathy Lu
1. Download
Go to the Mass Storage Synchronizer site to check whether your cell is supported. If it is, download the program. Open the application's folder and locate the script for your phone. With names like "MassStorSync Nokia," it's pretty easy to figure out which one to use. Note that Sony Ericsson models use the generic MassStorSync script.
2. Organize
Open iTunes and create a new playlist. There's no room for originality in what you name it: Each phone requires a precise playlist title for the script to work. Open the Read Me file in the Mass Storage Synchronizer folder to find the correct name. For the W800i, it was "My Sony Device." Drag the songs you want into the playlist you just created.
3. Sync
Connect the phone to your PC. If you haven't already, you may need to install the phone's drivers on your computer. To start syncing, double-click the script that corresponds to your model. When finished, disconnect the phone from your computer, launch your mobile's MP3 player, and revel in your new iTunes-downloaded music.
