The first Mashup Camp is winding down right now in Mountain View, CA. The "uncomputer conference" is the first major meeting of the minds of mashups. Mashups, which use data from one site — culled using a public API — to power a service on another site, are all the rage in the Web 2.0 world.
Most mashups provide nothing more than a bit of fun, but there are some mashups which provide truly revolutionary web services. The trick, and one of the main focuses of Mashup Camp, is finding a way to turn those cutting edge mashups into revenue.
The focus on business aside, attendees at Mashup Camp still found a way to have some fun. Everyone got a wooden nickel when they checked in at the registration desk. Then, attendees voted for their favorite of the 28 mashups on the demo floor by handing over their wooden nickel to the presenter of their favorite mashup. The presenter with the most wooden nickels wins first place. And the prize ain't no mashed potatos — It's a Sun Niagara server.
We'll show you the finalists right here on Monkey Bites, starting with third place.
