Mick Garris has some scary friends. The creator of Masters of Horror, a Showtime series set to premiere in October, hangs out with John Carpenter (Halloween), Tobe Hooper (Texas Chain Saw Massacre), George Romero (Dawn of the Dead), and other directors. Garris, who did Stephen King's The Stand, said the idea for the series - that the film industry's biggest fearmongers would each oversee an hour-long episode - grew out of dinner conversations with his peers. Masters of Horror will feature plenty of prosthetics and CG, but don't expect big-budget productions. "It's not like the usual teen-friendly horror movies that go up on 3,000 screens in every mall across the country," Garris says. "We're not test-marketing. On this show, the director is king."
