Gearhead hackers redefine the "hybrid" car.

DeLorean / Monster Truck Computer engineer and car nut Rich Weissensel reimagines DeLoreans. So far, he's made a convertible, a hovercraft, and a replica of the Back to the Future time machine. But, Weissensel says, what turns the most heads is his Delorasaurus rex, a 4×4 made by cross-pollinating a 1981 DeLorean with a 1979 Chevy Blazer. Oh yeah, and throw in a set of 44-inch mud bogger tires. "Some love it, some hate it," he says. "The term badass is used quite often."

Hummer / Golf Cart From the battlefields in Afghanistan and Iraq to the sand traps of Pebble Beach – we give you the H-Sport. When Austrian-born Heinz Harrer moved to Florida and opened a golf cart shop, he immediately received requests for custom jobs. "That made me think, What's the biggest all-terrain vehicle?" he says. "The Hummer." Since 1998, he's built hundreds of Humvee fairway buggies, some decked out with aluminum wheels, audio and video systems, and air-conditioning. "They cost up to $22,000," Heinz says. "The golf cart industry is crazy."

Mini Cooper / Station Wagon / Limo George Barris is best known for designing TV's Batmobile and Munsters car. Last year, working with associates Vini Bergman and Randy Morton, he created the Doubleheader, an 18-foot-long, two-front-end Mini Cooper painted in four different styles – from classic hot rod to woody station wagon. The stretch is street legal and, with two drivers, can travel down the road sideways. Hot tub included.

Subaru Van / Classic VW Bus The cult of the small has long flourished in Japan. And now there's a new tiny trend among the country's custom-car fanatics – commercial minivans worked over to resemble squashed VW buses. Takehiro Ono and his 1998 Subaru Samba KV3 freight van are legendary in this burgeoning scene. Perfecting his bus has taken Ono two years. He insists he's not finished, but the result is authentic enough to convince some onlookers that the vehicle was made in Germany.
