LOS ANGELES — Each year, the video-game industry spends three days here dispensing information, excitement and a large dose of hype. E3 is when we get our first peek at new console systems, as well as the games that will appear over the coming year.

This year’s conference will be dominated by news of three new consoles: Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Revolution. Wired News will be on the show floor to check out not only these consoles, but the games and technology that will have everyone talking.

Peter Jackson’s King Kong: When Ubisoft and Peter Jackson announced that they would work together to develop a video game version of Jackson’s upcoming King Kong movie, there was some thought that it would be just another port of a movie to a console. But Jackson has worked closely with the developers — the game uses many of the same computer generated environments as the film, and even includes some CGI creatures that Jackson created for the movie but couldn’t include.

Microsoft Xbox 360: Microsoft promises a November release for the 360, the first of the new consoles to hit the market. The 360 will not only function as a game console, but as a Media Center Extender, allowing users to play movies and music through the unit over their home networks.

Nintendo Revolution: Nintendo showed off a prototype version of its new console, which will hit the streets in 2006. The company also announced that the Revolution will play 20 years of Nintendo games, including titles from the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super NES and the Nintendo 64.

Sony PlayStation 3: Sony is the current leader in the console war — will its new machine have the horsepower to stay in front? The technology demo the company offered seemed to indicate that the PS3 might have the most graphical strength of the new generation of consoles, but it won’t reach the streets until long after the Xbox 360.
