Sandy Collora has made a career out of scaring people. For the past 15 years he's designed creatures for videogames and movies – those are his baddies in Predator, The Crow, and Men in Black. Now the prop master is making the jump to the director's chair. Like other Hollywood effects pros, including Bo Welch (Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat) and Phil Tippett (Starship Troopers 2), Collora wants to run the show. He's already overhauled Batman in an online short; just think what he could do in theaters with The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

The Making of Sandy Collora AGE: 35 CRED: Known for creating the Jurassic Park logo, as well as creatures for movies like The Abyss, Predator 2, and Total Recall. EARLY WORK: Designed props for Stan Winston Studios, sculpted figurines for Mattel and Toy Biz, and produced the alien "Got Milk?" commercial. LATEST CLAIM TO FAME: The seven-minute short Batman: Dead End. In its first two months online, Dead End was downloaded more than 1.6 million times. Its appeal: Collora's Batman is more human than Hollywood's. Like the TV and comic book characters, his hero is someone audiences identify with. WHAT'S NEXT: A big-budget feature. He's met with Universal to chat up a remake of The Creature From the Black Lagoon, and developed Guardians of Atlantis, a movie Collora calls "an underwater Lord of the Rings." Nemo had better watch his back.
