Each cosmic ray detector includes numerous sheds with doors that are opened during nighttime observing periods. The mirrors inside the sheds detect the faint ultraviolet fluorescent flash in the sky that is created when an incoming cosmic ray hits a gas molecule in Earth’s atmosphere.
