He brought the translucent computer to Apple, designed the hiptop at Danger, and created an interactive wristwatch for Ericsson. So why would the eclectic electronics designer Thomas Meyerhoffer take on a product as static and mundane as a chair? Cappellini of Italy sought his expertise for its contemporary furniture. Meyerhoffer brought new tools - and a new approach - to the process. Thanks to 3-D modeling and rapid prototyping, his design went straight from CAD data to production, he says, "the same way we worked at Apple." The m2 chair, available at high-end furniture stores, is made of molded plastic with a sculpted foam pad, materials more often associated with seats on bicycles than those sold in Milan showrooms. As for Meyerhoffer, he's already back in his usual saddle. His current project: a mini-PC for Vulcan Ventures.
