| Gary Nemchock Shields up: A radically redesigned Wisconson barn.
Sure, titanium resists corrosion for 100 years, and yes, it's famously as light as aluminum and as strong as steel. But the pricey metal beloved by aerospace is also just cool. The titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao made the town a tourist attraction. The Denver Art Museum expansion will soon be wrapped in the lustrous metal, and an airport terminal in the United Arab Emirates will rely on it for support and gleam. Now titanium is turning up on home-remodeling jobs, too. Designers are using it to guard against the salty air at beach houses in California, seal the leaky roof of a faux castle in the Netherlands, even decorate a Wisconsin barn. As titanium makers pursue new markets, look for more shiny, happy buildings to come. – Adam Rogers
