The kimono hasn't changed much in the past 1,200 years: It's still a complicated combo of strings, knots, and intricate folds. This season, Kanebo Ltd. unfurled an alternative robe that fastens with Velcro. Because the sticky tape is strategically placed on seams, even girls with two left hands can wrap themselves in the beautiful fabric. "I can put it on myself instead of asking my mom," says 16-year-old Erica Tanaka. "I feel just like an old-fashioned Japanese girl, but better since I have a cell phone tucked in my Velcro obi."
