The kid robot who showed us the future is about to catch up with his past. April 7, 2003, is Astroboy's birth date - as imagined 50 years ago by creator Tezuka Osamu. During those five decades, the character has become as familiar to manga fans as Mickey Mouse, his face plastered on hundreds of products, and his body inspiring Honda's dancing Asimo and Sony's SDR-4X humanoids. Astroboy's rebirth sparks a year of celebration in Japan, with a new TV series and several special exhibits. One show - fittingly in Kyoto's space-age train station - flaunts a collection of prints and rare film cels of the predicted future. Now that Astroboy is reborn, shiny hot pants and knee-high boots also get a second life.
