How do you get a city full of people who never walk to stretch their legs? Set up an interactive project in the middle of downtown that takes visitors on a satellite-guided tour. 34 North 118 West (www.34n118w.net) is a tech-driven choose-your-own-adventure created by a trio of Los Angeles artists. You roam a half-mile area armed with a GPS receiver, headphones, and a Tablet PC, which displays your movement on a digital version of a century-old map. Hot spots trigger audio accounts of the city's history as a bustling railroad hub. The route you take determines the stories and their tellers - a cook, the station clock inspector, a worker clearing the tracks after a suicide. "It's a shift in how you perceive interface," says programmer Jeff Knowlton. "You become the mouse, and the streets are the desktop."
