Live Long and Prosper
Aging alpha geeks are spreading the word about a supposedly age-defying wonder pill: Juvenon Energy Formula. The nutraceutical, invented in 1997 by iconoclastic UC Berkeley biochemist Bruce Ames, is a patented combo of three common health-food store supplements: calcium, alpha lipoic acid, and acetyle l-carnitine. Ames founded a startup to sell the stuff ($40, available only online at juvenon.com). Does it really pep you up and extend life? A handful of clinical trials have shown promise. More are under way. But enthusiastic early adopters aren't waiting for absolute proof. Here are three who have dived in.
Charles Townes, 87
Nobel Prize-winning co-inventor of the laser
I've been taking it: About a month and a half.
Why?: To keep my memory going and maybe add some years.
What it does for me: Nothing so far. I'm still waiting - these kinds of things are pretty hard to quantify.
How long I'd like to live: 107
No. 2 life-extension strategy: Working in the lab.
Stewart Brand, 63
Founder of the Whole Earth Catalog and president of the Long Now Foundation
I've been taking it: About eight months.
Why?: The downside is negligible, and I don't want to sit anything out.
What it does for me: Helps my memory, and I can exert myself strongly now and not get out of breath.
How long I'd like to live: I don't really think about that. But 200 is an age that comes up a lot when people talk about life-extension.
No. 2 life-extension strategy: Exercise and folic acid supplements.
John Robb, 40
President of UserLand Software and former Air Force special-ops pilot
I've been taking it: About a month and a half.
Why?: To regain some of the energy I had in my early twenties.
What it does for me: Keeps me more positive and upbeat than I used to be.
How long I'd like to live: Forever.
No. 2 life-extension strategy: I eat a lot of meat.
