On Wall Street, few recognized Human Genome Sciences 2001 annual report as an art book. But rip out the 34 pages of financials, and youre left with a fine exhibition of the work of artist Ross Bleckner. Based on electron microscope images, Bleckners Cell Paintings series is as detailed as the revenue figures, but far more evocative from Mysticism for Beginners on the cover (center) to Middle Brother (immediate right) in the bowels of the report. Our research can be abstract and hard to grasp, says William Haseltine, the companys founder and CEO. So we use art to defuse the fear that our work may engender. And likewise, to convey the beauty behind the genome.
