The problem with ultraportable digital video cameras: Theyre tough to keep steady. So British director Mike Figgis (Timecode, Leaving Las Vegas) and designer Ben Wilson built a rig to minimize the shakes. The aluminum prototype works a lot like a steering wheel. With hands on either side, its easier to maintain stability, Figgis says. Theres just enough weight to turn gravity into an advantage. Beyond serving as a steadicam, the apparatus can act as a mobile film crew just attach lights, microphones, VU meters, and remote controls. Patent applications are pending in the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia, but tweaks are constantly being made. On the set of Hotel, actor David Schwimmer offered the following idea: Put a little horn on it somewhere, and if an extra gets in your way, press it and they will fuckin move!
