Before the digital camera, before the Polaroid, the photo booth instantly captured the moment. Babbette Hines chronicles our enduring fascination with this age-old machine in Photobooth. The book consists of roughly 600 shots culled from Hines personal collection of almost 3,000, most of which she found on Sunday morning trips to flea markets. When Hines started buying, photos were about 25 cents apiece. Now Im almost priced out of the market, she says, noting that eBay sellers fetch as much as $50 for a vintage snapshot. Though new features — like sticker sheets and psychedelic backgrounds — have come along, the dimensions of the booth have remained relatively unchanged since its invention in 1925. Some formats dont need to be upgraded.
