Its been almost 20 years since Koyaanisqatsi sent audiences into a state of sensory overload. On October 18, director Godfrey Reggio returns with Naqoyqatsi, the final film in his qatsi trilogy. The 85-minute mind trip, devoid of dialog and set to music by Philip Glass and Yo-Yo Ma, offers a haunting view of the 21st-century technological rush. Ive tried to take a thousand pictures and point to one word — naqoyqatsi, says Reggio. The Hopi term translates to civilized violence and life is a war. Reggio barrages us with images to make his point, digitizing and reanimating stock footage from such diverse sources as newsreels, corporate videos, and scientific films, stripping them of their original sound and context. Prepare for kaleidoscopic beauty.
