Sea Change
This psychefolkadelic rocket ride through inner space will leave you breathless. Tantric dichotomies of hillbilly moans and lush strings define Lonesome Tears (a 21st-century cowboy ballad sung through an opiate haze), while languid guitar, Americana twang, and ethereal electric grime combine effortlessly in The Golden Age and Little One. This unfiltered and unflinchingly intimate first-person trip may not be Becks final metamorphosis, yet as mutations go, its a masterpiece.

A Hundred Days Off
Many thought this UK trio would be irreparably crippled when longtime DJ Darren Emerson left. It wasnt. On the first album since his defection, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith continue to incite the bump- and-groove set. The best tracks, however, are the chill Little Speaker, Luetin, and No More, on which the duo lets seductively pulsating beats and subtle atmospherics do the dancing.

Monsters, Inc.
One peek inside Pixar HQ — with its scooters, flying airplane contests, and live-in monkey — makes the films tale of a spotted monster who captures childrens screams for electricity seem normal. Hawaiian-shirted techies deftly explain the hair-ball fur test behind Sullivans lifelike coat and why Mikes character ended up with arms rather than just expressive feet. One staffer has even turned his A/C vent into a lounge — complete with signatures of visiting bigwigs Steve Jobs and Michael Eisner. Now thats a creative process!

Gasping to keep up with the high tech world? Then take in Gus Van Sants glacially paced meditation on the vastness of the universe. With minimal dialog, this existential exploration of two guys (Matt Damon and Casey Affleck) lost in the desert speaks volumes about our screwed-up new-millennium priorities. The extended, bleak scenery shots will test a squirmy audiences patience, and thats the point. This is old-fashioned indie filmmaking at its best — it works only if it makes you think.

Ghost Master
Its The Sims meets Amityville Horror as you choreograph the haunting of houses, woods, castles, and other creepy locales in order to scare away the human inhabitants. Command the kitchen walls to bleed, dispatch a rampaging poltergeist to the den, and let the terror commence. The games bounty of Hollywood references is fun, but controlling strategically placed virtual cameras to create your own frightful flick is even better.

Kingdom Hearts
Heres a Disney world Walt surely wouldnt recognize. The developers of Final Fantasy raided the Magic Kingdoms vault and cast 100 Disney characters alongside Square anime icons Cloud and Wakka, among others. Within 10 minutes, you forget how freaky it is that Mickey was kidnapped by shape-shifting creatures and enjoy the adventure. As the 14-year-old hero, Sora (voiced by Haley Joel Osment), you fight villains like Jafar and Captain Hook while you search for Mickey. Send the kids to the theme park: This is adult entertainment.

The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security
Kevin Mitnick with William Simon
He was the FBIs most-wanted hacker. But in his own eyes, Mitnick was simply a small-time con artist with an incredible memory, a knack for social engineering, and an enemy at The New York Times. That foe, John Markoff, made big bucks selling two books about Mitnick — without ever interviewing him. This is Mitnicks account, complete with advice for how to protect yourself from similar attacks. I believe his story.
