SCRATCHING THE SURFACE OF DJ IRENES TECH OBSESSION
DJ Irene is in demand. After a decade in the LA club scene, the thirtysomething firebrand has become one of Americas hottest jocks. Her success didnt come easy: Before her Grammy party gig, Golden Turntable nomination, and new album, Photosynthesis, Irene Gutierrez spent a few lean years living out of her 85 GMC Jimmy 4x4. These days, shes decorating her new abode in the tony Laurel Canyon hills with gear (some acquired through her sponsorship deal with Pioneer). So far, shes stuffed top-of-the-line speakers, decks, and synths, as well as a half-dozen sound modules, into her 165-square-foot home studio. My equipment is very important to my art, says Irene. Do you think Cher would perform in some Kmart Special outfit? To prove her point, Irene gave Wired a guided tour of her arsenal.

This is my old standby. It makes these big symphony sounds, like on Pusakas Youre the Worst Thing for Me, which was a hit. I couldnt live without it.
POWER MAc G4
I just got this. I use it for recording, some mixing, or for just listening to music while I work in the studio.

I look at this for inspiration. It was given to a few select people, and I have one. I want to work with her one day, you know, bitch versus bitch.

I made my first song on this. It was called (Wanna Fuck Me) You Got to Pay Me.
Pioneer CDJ-1000
Its the best CD player you can ever have. It can play even the most scratched-up discs. I have to have it at all times.
