This multimillion-dollar dry lab-one of only two in the US-is used to train doctors on the very latest medical equipment, such as Computer Motionés advanced surgical robots and Karl Storzés touchscreen-activated control systems. The classroom, known as the Gonda Robotic Surgery Center, is a prototype for 22 live operating rooms at the new UCLA Medical Center slated to open in January 2005.
TELEMEDICINE SYSTEM
Running over four dedicated ISDN lines, the Socrates system lets specialists outside the OR consult on procedures-and even control the surgical robot.
IN-ROOM NETWORK
The OR 1 touchscreen runs everything from the endoscope to the overhead lights. Input a procedure, and OR 1 reconfigures the setup, shifting new equipment into place.
SURGICAL ROBOT
The three-armed Zeus gives the best doctors even better precision, increasing dexterity, filtering out hand tremors, and allowing for the smallest of incisions.
ENDOSCOPIC CAMERA
The Image 1, the first fully digital endoscopic camera, crunches 1.14 billion calculations per second, for unprecedented clarity and resolution.
HOSPITAL-WIDE NETWORK
The OR 1 system lets doctors get hospital data (like patient test results and medication lists) and send it to any monitor in the room.
