With a 6,343-horsepower motor driving a 26-foot-diameter fan, DaimlerChryslerés new wind tunnel can simulate a Mercedes CL500 streaking down the Autobahn at 150 mph or the impact of a Category 5 hurricane blasting the side of a minivan. Most carmakers operate wind tunnels, in part because improving aerodynamics is one of the best ways to boost fuel economy. Unlike standard tunnels, which can be as loud as a freight train, the $37.5 million facility at the Chrysler Technology Center in suburban Detroit is so quiet you can hear the faint but annoying whine of a carés antenna in the windstream.-Wind noise is a top customer complaint,é says Chrysler Group CEO Dieter Zetsche. Now solving that design problem will be a breeze.
