Imagine an 8-story-tall Tom Hanks — not exactly the guy next door anymore. But such is his presence in the Imax version of Apollo 13, the first blockbuster to be converted into a large-format epic using new remastering software. To start, each 35-mm frame is digitized. Next, a mathematical filter diminishes the grainy fuzz that results with any image blowup. After running the calculations through a render farm, the digital frames are recorded directly onto Imax-scale 70-mm film. Is supersize better?
