Defy gravity at Newyorkexitnewyork, a 3-D interactive exhibit taking shape at Siggraph in July. With a joystick as your guide, you can fly through the urban chaos - brushing the underbellies of taxicabs and climbing the walls of storied skyscrapers. French multimedia artists Priam Givord and Martin Lenclos spent a year and a half constructing this 2.5-square-mile virtual cityscape (www.newyorkexitnewyork.com). The pair shot videotape, took measurements, and snapped more than 6,000 photos of New York, then tweaked reality with Virtools Dev 2.0 software. "We had a point to prove concerning computer graphics and real-time 3-D," says Givord. What they came up with is the surfing experience of the next decade.
