When Sony shipped a Linux kit for the PlayStation 2 in Japan last summer, it started a determined uprising - some 22,000 freeware fans worldwide demanded to see the adapter in their region. A year later, Sony is giving the people what they want. The US version makes the PS2 function like a desktop PC and enables users to develop graphics-driven apps and games. The $199 kit includes a 40-gig internal hard drive, an Ethernet adapter, a keyboard, and a mouse. Don't fret about a lack of content in the first few months of release - most existing Linux programs can be ported to the PS2, and there's already a thriving Web community (www.playstation2-linux.com) devoted to homegrown software.
