Director Gary Winick elevates the digital video movement with an indie heavy on story. Using subtle comedic twists, he turns a prep-school brainiac with a crush on his stepmom (Sigourney Weaver) into a heartbreaker. Minimal lighting, handheld cameras, and a 15-person crew make for rough cinematography. But who cares? Winick won a Sundance director's award and sold his low-budget effort to Miramax for $5 million.
