ELECTRIC WORD

Alba D'Urbano's eye-catching clothes - digitally printed with images of her naked body - blur the line between inner and outer. This revealing suit, worn by a model here, will be part of Skin: Surface, Substance, and Design, an exhibit opening on May 14 at New York's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. The show explores how artists, designers, and architects are experimenting with new materials and technologies that respond to their environments, sometimes quite literally. The heat-sensitive Chromazone table by Karim Rashid changes color when hot objects are placed on it. Corpo Nove's Cooling System jacket is plumbed with plastic tubing that circulates chilled water to refresh the body. Skin features 170 pieces - including lamps, architectural renderings, and other works that illustrate how surfaces can be more than meets the eye.
