Talk about population growth. State of Emergency serves up more than 250 autonomous characters onscreen at once, a never-before-achieved feat. Each member of the game's mob independently runs, smashes windows, and loots stores. "The route-finding and behaviors have to be processed at the same time, and all in a single frame,"says Vis Entertainment producer Craig Hunter. The company eked out every bit of PS2 capacity and built its own melee-simulating engine to add mayhem and panic at every turn. Players dodge flying glass and falling buildings as they become part of the quarantined city's destructible environments (yes, you can blow up almost anything). Unfortunately, you'll have to go it alone - State of Emergency is a single-player adventure.
