Work hard, play harder

For professional nerds, exercise is torture tantamount to social interaction. But CycleFX's GameRider stationary exercise bike will quench players' thirst for videogame marathons and make them enjoy burning calories.

Despite a space age appearance, owing to its onboard computer and attached PlayStation controller, the user interface is strictly down-to-earth. Essentially, the faster I pedaled, the faster my onscreen persona traveled. Swiveling handlebars and push-button attachments provide ergonomic controls for turning and stopping.

Custom-set pacing and sensitivity functions allow cycling at speeds that won't induce cardiac arrest. Still, I worked up a sweat flying through Yosemite National Park in Test Drive Off-Road: Wide Open.

The only drag: the long 20-minute setup. Then again, the next-best alternative to exercise is liposuction, and you know the recovery time on that.
