As if L. Frank Baum's flying monkeys weren't scary enough. Videogame designer American McGee sculpted an even more sinister simian for his Wizard of Oz-based adventure, due in 2003 from Carbon6 (www.carbon6.com). In McGee's macabre spin on the classic children's tale, evil forces overtake the Emerald City, attacking hapless heroes with stones, spears, claws, and teeth. McGee draws inspiration from his own adolescence, which included being abandoned by his mother at age 16. "Because of my experiences," he says, "I like putting dark twists on stories." Indeed, the 29-year-old wowed players earlier this year with his violent interpretation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, in which a knife-wielding Alice returns to avenge her childhood trauma by shredding the Queen of Hearts. We can only imagine what Dorothy would do.
