The Gist: Co-op Animation
Free
What's extraordinary about Major Damage is not necessarily the film itself, but the means by which it sprang to life. The 2.5-minute garage project, a glimpse of a child fascinated with a genetically engineered comic book superhero, began as a side venture for veteran animator Chris Bailey and a few pals. It steadily morphed into a two-year global enterprise involving more than 100 dedicated artists from some of the world's most prestigious effects houses, including Space Ghost and Skywalker Sound. This convergence of talent, governed by Bailey, hammered through the entire production process - from storyboards to final rendering - via the Internet. In this sense, Major Damage redefines what new media is and provides a fresh appreciation (or disdain) for the labors of behemoths such as Pixar, PDI, and Square.
