Lenin's Tomb: The Last Days of the Soviet Empire, by David Remnick "The Lithuanian independence movement in 1991 was a peaceful protest until the Soviet tanks came in and killed 15 people. But on Soviet television, Alexander Nevzorov portrayed it as frenzied Lithuanians assaulting Soviet soldiers. Nevzorov was known as the 'Ice-T of Soviet television' - a young, hip propaganda artist for a generation of Russians who didn't believe the men in gray suits. I worked in Lithuania for three years, and it's a different mind-set there - people only cared about today because they couldn't trust the currency, didn't know if Russia would invade again, and thought the nearby Chernobyl-style reactor might blow any time."

Folklore, Memoirs, & Other Writings, by Zora Neale Hurston "I came across Hurston while researching folklore for American Gods. She was quoted everywhere, and once I looked her up, I realized I had to read everything she ever wrote. She's an amazing source for African-American folk stories, and her writing is an absolute delight. It takes you into someone else's head with natural ease. Her work reminds us of why we have and need mythology. I see her influence in contemporary science fiction, like Nalo Hopkinson's Midnight Robber, which is about a Caribbean-colonized planet."
