The Gist: Your Wireless Landline
$199

Pop your Motorola StarTAC or Nokia 5100/6200 series into the Extensis cradle, and your cell phone number becomes a second landline. The cradle connects to the back of any standard two-line phone, meaning you don't have to pay for an extra feed. And you can use a regular telephone to place and receive calls on your mobile, or put them on speaker.

Whether Extensis is for you really depends on your cellular plan. Most include a no-answer transfer feature, which forwards unanswered calls to another line, making a cell-to-land hookup unnecessary. But if your subscription includes free long distance, Extensis allows you to use your comfy home phone for cross-country yakfests without paying a dime. Be warned - calls placed through Extensis still suffer from the static and breakups you get with a cell. But it's a step closer to simplifying your life.
