The Gist: Jamming The Culture Of Space
$25.95
Scottish science fiction writer Ken MacLeod doesn't just create believable futures - he breaks them down to explain what makes them tick.
MacLeod's focus on petty details helps bring characters like Matt Cairns, a programmer living in mid-21st-century Scotland, to life. When an alien contact is made in Matt's world, the gee-whiz stage lasts about a minute, then everyone goes on about their business: Spies worry about crypto, freelance programmers wonder how much the aliens pay, and political operatives break out the knives.
It's always refreshing when an author doesn't take himself too seriously, and MacLeod is never better than when he tosses out clever ideas while snapping off quick jokes about computers or UFO enthusiasts. References can get obscure - just run them by Google; it's worth it.
