COMIC BOOK
The Gist: Caped Crusaders Meet Love & Rockets
$29.95
If you were raised on superhero comics and moved on to the independents later in life, you'll love Bizarro Comics. Seeing the two universes collide is like getting your best friends from grade school in the same room with your college buddies.
Indie stars Evan Dorkin (Milk & Cheese), Dave Cooper (Weasel), and Dean Haspiel (Billy Dogma) are among the 23 writers spoofing DC Comics' 63-year history of superheroes. The longest story in the collection establishes its premise: Superman's imperfect duplicate, Bizarro, is drawing comic books to try to save the fifth dimension from a giant frog-faced villain. Threads here are appropriately bizarre: Aquaman's stubborn refusal to apologize to fish gets him killed; and billionaire Bruce Wayne loses his fortune to a supervillain named the Eraser.
One drawback is that these stories remain fairly tame. Chip Kidd pens a twisted Batman story, but even that's no TV Funhouse.
