GAME
The Gist: Best Bang-Bang For Your Browser
Free
Showdown blew me out of my virtual chaps. Powered by a custom-built game engine for the Web, this shoot-'em-up looks and plays better than most PlayStation offerings yet runs on any browser and doesn't require a graphics accelerator card.
The game tests wits and grit in the Wild West, but the story takes a backseat as you engage in bloody duels and scramble through dusty streets nabbing loose ammo and firearms. I felt like Gene Hackman in The Quick and the Dead until some lucky cowpoke forced me to take a dirt nap. It's single-player only now, but the Groove Alliance (maker of hits Real Pool 3D and Tank Wars) is readying a multiplayer version complete with a chat lobby and shooter rankings. Just think: Players will hang out in the Showdown Web saloon until some city slicker challenges them. To prep, I'll be honing my quick-draw skills.
